Benedictine Monastery

Monastery of the Transfiguration
Barangay San Isidro, Malaybalay, Bukidnon

By the time Malaybalay City wakes up to the chill of a December morn, I was already at the yellow box waiting for a Valencia-bound multicab. Manong the receptionist--who is from San Isidro where the monastery is located--back at the inn gave me directions and habal-habal rate from the highway to the Church of the Transfiguration--the church is the last project of the late National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin. After a series of adventures and misadventures, I was already two barangays beyond the junction.

Here now is the reason why I decided to spend two days and a night and a dawn mass (with the renowned Bukidnon Boy's Choir singing) inside this hundred hectare property in the middle of nowhere. The uber-friendly rate--hold your breath--of Php600.00 daily (it's actually called donation; and includes your room and three board meals, two snacks and 24-hour free-flowing coffee; meals and coffee all prepared by the blessed hands of the Benedictine monks) is beyond me.

More on breakfast with the monks next time.

Meanwhile...here is day ONE, away from all the worries and cares of the world and deep into silence and SELF and into a life of prayer. For one moment that eventually turned into days, I was at peace with the world and myself; and the call (..should i answer soon?) to the monastic life reverberates once more..and this time it's louder..

If heaven is on earth, this must be IT!

  8. i agree. a hundred and one per cent.
i highly recommend going there during christmas season, sa misa de gallo. grabeha kaayong experience. very solemn thru and thru. plus the renowned bukidnon boys choir singing. i had goosebumps from start to finish of the mass.
it's seldom one attends mass this kind and it was probably the closest thing to HEAVEN.

  13. yup. but if i may suggest, you call the guestmaster ahead. sometimes, it could be filled to capacity with group retreat. since i was there in the tailend of december, there were only a few.

i was on a self-retreat. and there was another one from bukidnon.

just a friendly reminder, the place is for those who want to get away from the crazy express lane life and want to recharge, full batt, in SPIRITUALITY.

    be well...

  14. call/SMS ahead the guestmaster Dom Martin for availability ug timing nga SECOND SUNDAY of the month so you can have BRUNCH with the monks (right after the Sunday mass). Churchgoers from as far as Davao and Manila go for the experience and ahem food. (php150.00/pax buffet)

  15. hey! i was there 5 years ago (goin' 6)! the place is cool. The mass being held there are very solemn since it's so far away from civilization. I even bought St. Benedict's medallion which helps in driving the evil spirits, most especially in exorcism. I gave the medallion to my Mother.

FYI: The architect who designed this nifty church is the same architect who designed the Palace of the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. And he is a National Artist.

  16. and actually the same architect who designed the CCP and the 5-storey apartment where i used to live in malate...hehehe. so for quite sometime, i breathe his design. hahaha

  21. yeah their coffee. i love the aroma of their coffee in the morning. yeah it sure did drive some inner demons!

have you ever been to nasuli? i'm warning you, the water in there is infested with fluke carrying snails! you might get a bloated stomach, or worst, jaundice. if ever you did jump in to the water, my advice is take a tablet of Antiox ASAP, then repeat after three months.

Why I know this? I have stayed in both Malaybalay and Valencia for almost two months. And I'm a veterinarian, so I know this kinds of stuffs.

    Just an unsolicited advice.

  22. froggy, frog, frog!

just like pampangenos, the bukidnon people eat frogs since they are pests in their palay.

  27. i wonder how it tastes.
never tried yet and i dint bother ask if those froggy froggy grog would go straight to the monastery kitchen and was mixed in lunch.

    ReplyDelete
  28. yup. for lack of better words.

you should get there soon. timing nga nga maka attend ka sa 8AM mass on the second Sunday of the month so you can feel the rhythm of the place from start of mass to end of brunch with the monks (the monks do all the cooking as you know).

  39. I want to visit it ..how do you go there from manila?

    ReplyDelete
  40. ..once you disembark at the CDO airport (i have no idea how far it really is from there to downtown), ask taxi driver to bring you to Agora terminal for the Valencia-bound Bachelor Express Bus (fare is about Php190.00). Travel time to Valencia is about 2-hours. Tell the bus driver you will alight in the junction going to the monastery in Malaybalay. from the junction, you could either walk (about 1 km.) or hire a motorbike at Php30.00 one way. I recommend you take the morning trip para easy.

Just in case you want to check lodging availability, I have the contact number.

    ReplyDelete
  41. where you able go to lake apo or edlimar in valencia?
